First published in the seventeenth century (1672-1724 under the title Mercure galant), the Mercure de France served generally as the chief publication reporting on court life, fashion and the arts. From 1724 its editor was appointed by the French court and it was de facto an official government periodical. It was suppressed in 1811 and ceased publication in 1825. The name was revived in 1890 as a literary review.
