Capital of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and from 1737 a secundogeniture of the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty following the dying out of the Medici family. The Grand Duke during Mozart's time in Florence, Leopold, a son of Maria Theresia and Franz I, later became Emperor Leopold II, succeeding his brother Joseph II.

Mozart and his father were in Florence 30 March-6 April 1770; they stayed at the L'Aquila Nera (via Borgognissanti, 4). Mozart gave a concert at the Villa Poggio Imperiale on 2 April and on 5 April played at the home of Giuseppe Maria Gavard des Pivets.
