San Petronio (piazza Maggiore) is the main church of Bologna. Founded in 1388, it is dedicated to the patron saint of the city. Musically it was important for its sacred music, its early cultivation of instrumental music, and as a training ground for opera singers. During Mozart’s time in Bologna, the maestro di cappella was Giuseppe Maria Carretti.
