The Mannheim Observatory owes its founding to the scientific interests of Elector Karl Theodor, who established a Physics Institute at Heidelberg in 1751 under the direction of Christian Mayer, Professor of Experimental Physics and Mathematics. A temporary observatory was established at Schwetzingen in 1761, to observe the transit of Venus; it was replaced by the Mannheim Observatory, constructed between 1772 and 1774.
