Souvenirs

First published in 1798 under the editorship of Johann Friedrich Rochlitz, and published weekly, the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung was the premiere German-language music periodical of the nineteenth century. It included articles on the history and theory of music and reviews of concerts and new publications from across Europe. Rochlitz published a series of anecdotes concerning Mozart in issues dated between 10 October 1798 and 27 May 1801 (see Maynard Solomon, ‘The Rochlitz Anecdotes’ in Mozart Studies, ed. C. Eisen (Oxford, 1991), 1-59) and a memoir of Mozart by his sister Nannerl in the 22 January 1800 issue (see Deutsch, Mozart. A Documentary Biography, 493-494).
