On 14 February 1770, Karl Joseph Firmian sent Pallavicini-Centurioni sent a letter of recommendation for the Mozarts. A draft of Pallavicini-Centurioni's reply survives in Archivio di Stato, Bologna:
- Excellency
- As soon as I received Your Excellency’s very warm letter from the Signore Mozart father and son, and understanding that they were not staying long in Bologna but wanting to spend a short time in Florence and then find themselves in Rome for Holy Week, I did not hesitate to respond to your efforts to make the rare talent of the young Mozart known and admired in this city. To that end, a gathering of 70 ladies took place at my house on Monday evening, which the cardinal legate, the princes of Holstein and almost all the nobility attended. The young professor gave such admirable proofs of his knowledge, which at his tender age would seem incredible to anyone who does not see them in person; they were all amazed and a young man of such singular merit was met with infinite pleasure.
- He is about to leave with his father and I gave him letters for Rome addressed to secretary of state Cardinal Pallavicini and to Prince Doria; and I hoping the cardinal will arrange for him to perform for His Holiness. This is what I believe I should offer for the merit of the recommended and to fulfill the most precious commandments of Your Excellency from whom, hoping for their continuation, I am, with constant and cordial observance,
- Your Excellency’s humblest and devoted servant.[1]
The same day he drafted a letter of recommendation for the Mozarts to his cousin Cardinal Lazzaro Opizio Pallavicini:
- Mr Leopold Mozart, the chapel master at the service of the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg, and his son, a young man of such singular merit in music, that at his tender age he not only equals the masters of his art, but perhaps outperforms them in the readiness of invention, has been strongly recommended to me by Count Firmian. In order to make his singular merit known to the cardinal legate and to this nobility, I held a gathering at my house on Monday evening, where with infinite admiration he was regarded as a prodigy, and judged so by the famous maestro Padre Martini, who was present. These professors leave Tuscany, where they will stay a few days in order to be in Rome during Holy Week, and I recommend them to Your Eminence, begging You to honour him with your protection during their stay there.
- Since I recognize in the young Mozart an extraordinary merit, I dare to propose to Your Eminence to have him performing in the presence of our His Holiness, all the more so that, in the presence of only one maestro di capella, who will examine him at the harpsichord, he will be able to give such proof of his value that I am pleased he will meet the full satisfaction of His Holiness.
- I would be very obliged to Your Eminence, if You, in bestowing on the signore Mozarts these favours, of which You will find them well worthy, would regard them as recommended by me; and with a constant and cordial reverence I invariably confirm myself

For Lazzaro Opizio’s reply, see here). About the same time Palavicini-Centurioni also apparently wrote letters of recommendation to Giorgio Andrea IV Doria Landi Pamphilij and to Mathieu-Dominique Saint-Odîle, since both wrote to him about the Mozarts on 21 April.
Pallavicini-Centurioni's summer home was at Croce de Baccio (via Sassi, 7). Mozart and his father stayed there from 10 August-1 October 1770.

Si tenne a questo fine Lunedi sera in mia casa una conversazione di 70. dame, alla quale intervennero il Sìg:re Cardinale Legato, i Sig:ri Principi di Holstein, e quasi tutta la nobiltà, e il giovane professore vi diede prove cosi ammirabili del suo sapere, die nella tenera sua età sembrerebbero incredibili a chi non le vede; ne rimasero tutti sorpresi, e conobbero con infinito piacere un giovane di un merito così singolare. Egli stà per partire assieme col padre, e gli dò lettere per Roma dirette al Sig:e Cardinale Pallavicini segretario di stato, e al Sig:re Principe Doria; e non sono lontano da credere, che il Sig:re Cardinale lo farà sentire a sua Santità. Tanto hò creduto di dover dare non meno per il merito de raccomandati, che per adempire i comandamenti pregiatissimì dell'E:a V:a, dalla quale sperandone la continuazione, sono con un costante, e cordiale ossequìo di V:a E:a: Dev:mo abbi :mo ser. e, vero
[2] Dal Sig:re conte di Fìrmian mi sono stati vivamente raccomandati il Sig:re Leopoldo Mozart maestro dì cappella al servizio del Sig:re Principe Arcivescovo di Salisburgo, e il di lui figlio, giovane di un merito così singolare nella musica, che nella tenera sua età, non solo eguaglia i maestri dell'arte, ma forse li supera nella prontezza dell'invenzione. Per far conoscere il singolare di lui merito a questo Sig:re Cardinale Legato, e à questa nobiltà tenni Lunedi sera una conversazione in mia casa, dove con infinita ammirazione fù riguardato come un prodigìa, e per tale fù giudicato dal celebre padre maestro Martini, che v'intervenne. Partono ora ì suddetti professori per Toscana, dove non si trattengono che pochi giorni per trovarsi in Roma la Settimana Santa, e li raccomando instantemente all'Em:a V:a supplicandola di onorarlo della sua protezione nel loro soggiorno costì. Siccome riconosco nel giovane Mozart un merito affatto straordinario, ardisco proporre à V:a Em:za di farlo sentire à N:o Sig:re, tanto più dìe senza strepito d'instromenti con la presenza di un solo maestro di capella, che lo esamini al cembalo, potrà dar prove tali del suo valore, che mi lusinga sia per incontrare la piena soddisfazione di sua Santità. Sarò ben tenuto all'Em:a V:a, se compartendo ai Sig:ri Mozart quei favori, di cui li troverà ben degni, vorrà altresi riguardarli come miei raccomandati; e con un costante e cordiale ossequio ìnvìolabilmente mi conferma Di V:a Em:za Dev:mo e abbi:mo ser:re e cugino C. P.
