Fought between July 1778 and May 1779, the War of the Bavarian Succession pitted an alliance of Saxony and Prussia against the Habsburg monarchy and its hegemonic designs on Bavaria following the death on 30 December 1777 of Maximilian III Joseph. The war ended with the Treaty of Teschen, signed on 13 May 1779, and the accession of Karl Theodor, Elector Palatine, as Elector of Bavaria.
